On October 5, 1898, Melvin Fleener closed his hotel for good.  By then, he had been in business for twelve years and wanted a rest.  The Fleener Hotel was one of the earliest and most popular hotels in Poteau.

St. Louis and San Fransisco Rail Line Completed

On November1, 1886, the Frisco line had extended to Bengal, Oklahoma from Fort Smith, Arkansas.  This line was the first to connect Poteau with the rest of the country and opened up a huge amount of trade in the area.
